Garden Therapy Program
Garden Therapy enhances the social, educational, psychological and physical wellbeing of participants. The Garden Therapy program was established to provide disabled, disadvantaged and older people the opportunity to participate in garden related activities.
Members of the Raleigh Garden Club travel to different facilities to share horticulture programs with these special individuals. Garden therapy not only improved the lives of participants, but the lives of caretakers, families and our volunteers as well.
Past activities have included:
- Making tussie-mussies (nosegays)
- Fresh flower arranging
- Propagating and planting a Christmas cactus
- House Plant Care
- Pressed flower cards
- Plant exchange
- Potting annual flowers
Facilities we've visited include: YWCA, Whitaker Mill Sr. Center, Brighton Gardens, Creedmoor Total Life Center and others.
Garden therapy sessions are held approximately once a month and members sign up at the general meeting to help the program participants with the planned activity. We are hoping to grow the program and expand to other facilities in the coming years.
