Program: The North Carolina Wildflower Program
Speaker: Derek Smith
North Carolina has the largest planted wildflower program in the country. With the cooperation of the Garden Club of NC and NC State University researchers, the program has grown from a mere 12 acres in 1985 to more than 1,500 acres currently in cultivation. We will learn about he history, funding, and management of this valuable program.
Our speaker, Derek Smith, has been employed by the NC Department of Transportation for 24 years, where he supervises the Vegetation Management Section, the Wetland/Stream Restoration section, and the Aesthetics Engineering Section. As part of his responsibilities, Derek helps to oversee the statewide implementation of the NC Wildflower Program and the NC Blue Star Memorial Program.
